Pa. sisters, filmmakers bring feature film ‘The Next Play’ to Bethlehem this summer

BETHLEHEM, PA – Local sisters and independent filmmakers Koula Sossiadis Kazista and Katina Sossiadis are gearing up to film their latest project, The Next Play, right here in the Lehigh Valley this summer. The film explores the high-stakes world of a high school girls’ field hockey team, diving into fierce rivalries, friendships, and the real pressures young athletes face today.

At its heart, The Next Play tackles an often-overlooked topic in youth sports: mental health. The filmmakers aim to spark conversations and highlight the emotional struggles student-athletes face behind the scenes.

This is a true grassroots effort, powered by a growing list of nonprofit and brand partners. The team has joined forces with organizations like Morgan’s Message, The Hidden Opponent, and the National Alliance on Mental Illness (Lehigh Valley), all leaders in mental health advocacy in athletics.

A major sponsor of the film, St. Luke’s Hospital has supported the filmmakers from the very beginning, sharing the project’s commitment to mental wellness and community care. They helped move the project forward from the very start.

Moravian University, the film’s main location, is also a key sponsor, backing the production’s mission to elevate the importance of mental health in student life.

Moravian’s HUB will be the first WELL pre certified building in the Lehigh Valley and open for Fall, 2025.

Other sponsors include field hockey-focused organizations like YOLO Sportswear, Hocsocx, Performance Sport Events, Female Athlete News, Longstreth, Wrappit Wrappit, and local tech company Zero, all helping amplify the voices of female athletes.

The film will also be working with local high schools to spotlight Lehigh Valley field hockey talent across the region.

Right now, the filmmakers are casting locally and looking for young women ages 18–25 to join the project. It’s a great opportunity to be part of a powerful and inspiring story.

The Next Play is still seeking final funding. Donations can be made through the film’s 501(c)(3) fiscal sponsor at donorbox.org/the-next-play or directly at www.thenextplaymovie.com.
